By Peter Richardson
When Steve Bruce was
sacked as our manager, after that dismal home defeat to Wigan in November 2011,
Peter Richardson decided to write a (joke) application to the club, asking to be his
replacement. He was amazed to receive a reply - a credit to our club, many
others wouldn't have bothered - and the idea for the book was hatched.
The book compiles all the
applications and the varied responses he received, plus stories thrown up
throughout the application processes. His tongue-in-cheek account is full
of real life stories about his time watching the lads, including when he
crashed his much-loved Fiat Punto, being put on the spot by a saleswoman at a
petrol station and entering the official odds to manage one Premier League
Rejected is a great read.
It will make you smile and wish a club had taken a punt on Peter. Given the
consistent failures of supposed 'football men' as managers, you think he can't
have done much worse, particularly if he'd been given a chance and players had
bought into his enthusiasm.
